In the comics, the Avengers team has been constantly changing. Members will join and leave, take charge and give up command. It’s always sad to see our favorites leave the team, but at least it has always opened up opportunities for new heroes to join the Avengers.
Some of the most powerful Marvel heroes have been a part of the Avengers team, and of course there have been other favorites as well. Naturally, with that many heroes coming and going, plenty of them have been women. Here we have a list of fifteen of the most powerful female characters to ever have been on the Avengers team.
Updated March 25th, 2020 by George Chrysostomou With the ever-approaching release of Black Widow, it seems appropriate that we revisit the Avengers and take a look at even more powerful women that have graced the ranks of the team — of which there are definitely more than plenty!
15 Doreen Green (AKA Squirrel Girl)
It seems odd to kick off this list with a hero that’s been used for comic relief over the years. However, Doreen Green seems to hold a powerful gift. It’s not just her relationship with squirrels! Squirrel Girl appears to be completely unbeatable.
She’s taken down Titans like Thanos and faced insurmountable odds and yet always comes out the other side victorious. It’s an ability that no one can quite understand, but the hero has served on teams like the Great Lakes and U.S.Avengers as a pivotal player.
14 Janet van Dyne (AKA Wasp)
Janet van Dyne earns her place on this list for a multitude of reasons. For example, she’s one of the five founding members of Avengers – and the only original female of the team. But the Wasp has proven herself to be a formidable hero in her own rights as well. Many know her either in the context of the Avengers, or in context of her relationship with Ant-Man. But Janet has always been a character with strong morals and opinions, and she was never afraid to share them. Nor did she ever let herself become compromised.
The Wasp has abilities that we all know and recognize – the ability to shrink and fly, as well as grow to giant proportions (though the latter with difficulty). But she’s also clever and determined. All of these features resulted in her being a strong leader for the Avengers, when the time called for it.
13 Laura Kinney (AKA X-23/Wolverine)
A mutant clone of the Wolverine, Laura has had a difficult life thus far but has become a true hero despite what she was created to be. She’s served on a number of teams and has taken part in the Avengers Academy and with the team in the Avengers Arena.
Although she is yet to serve on the main roster of the team, now that she has taken on the mantle of Wolverine it’s likely that in the future she’ll stand alongside the likes of Captain Marvel. Her claws and healing abilities make her extremely lethal!
12 Brunnhilde (AKA Valkyrie)
Brunnhilde’s inclusion in this list is a tiny bit of stretch, since she was only ever a member of the Secret Avengers. But it’s close enough that we’re going to count it, because she deserves to be on this list. Like all the Valkyries, Brunnhilde possesses all the attributes known to Asgardians. Extended life, extra strength, and durability, etc. She also has an enhanced healing factor. What makes her stand out among the Asgardians is her ability to perceive those who are in danger of dying – just like all Valkyries.
She can transport herself and the dying (or the dead) without aid. Brunnhilde is one of the best female fighters to come out of Asgard. She is second to none, save Sif (and even then it has never really been put to test). She’s an excellent sword fighter, and obviously brilliant at horseback riding as well.
11 Julia Carpenter (AKA Spider-Woman/Arachne, Madame Web)
Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman. Well, one of the Spider-Women, in any case. Julie has a few other known aliases, such as Arachne and Madame Web. Her incarnation of Spider-Woman first appeared during Secret Wars, where she proved to be a vital member of the team.
Julia possesses a host of abilities that make her extremely useful – and dangerous to her enemies. Like others that have carried the Spider- moniker, Julia has super strength, speed, agility, and stamina. She’s also very durable, and has the accelerated healing so many heroes wish for. If that wasn’t enough, Julia also has psionic abilities to round out her power base.
10 Ororo Munroe (AKA Storm)
Ororo (aka Storm) is another character that could never be left off this list. Storm is, quite obviously, a mutant. But she’s a strong one, with the ability to control the weather (to put it mildly). She is without a doubt one of the stronger mutants out there, and that’s just in regards to her abilities and powers.
Storm is also a member of the X-Men, so some would probably wonder how she ever had time to join the Avengers. But heroes like Storm will always make time to join as many teams as possible, or so it would seem. Ororo is also an incredibly grounded person. She’s created strong ties with countless other Marvel characters, and has saved many more.
9 Angelica Jones (AKA Firestar)
Despite being a mutant, Firestar is actually well known for her partnership with Spider-Man and for her role as part of the Avengers. Starting as a supporting member, Jones was eventually granted full membership to the heroic team.
Her fiery powers are all based on energy manipulation and the character has grown in strength throughout her time in Marvel Comics. She’s easily one of the most dangerous women on this list and will always hold within her an incredibly destructive power.
8 Jessica Jones (AKA Power Woman/Jewel/Knightress)
Jessica Jones is another one of our heroes who has carried many different names. Most recently she’s been a hero simply using her true name as her identity. But she’s also used Power Woman, Jewel, and Knightress.
Jessica’s most obvious superpower is super strength. That sounds all nice and simple, but Jess has mastered using her strength to deal with almost any situation thrown at her. From breaking in or out of a situation, to flying (some would argue she’s just really good at jumping), to dealing with her enemies.
One of Ultron’s many creations, Jocasta is significant in that she rebelled against her former master and sided with the Avengers. She has worked alongside the team for some time and is a pivotal part of the Avengers Academy training program.
Aside from her protective armor which is incredibly useful in battle, Jocasta is supremely intelligent and can use technology, unlike any human. Her abilities can’t really be replicated making her one of the most unique heroes on this list.
6 Monica Rambeau (AKA Photon/Spectrum/Captain Marvel)
Monica Rambeau is a superhero worth talking about – and worth adding to this list. She’s gone by many names in her time-saving lives. Currently she’s going by Spectrum, but she’s also gone by Photon, Captain Marvel, Pulsar, and Daystar. Monica gained her superpowers thanks to exposure, as opposed to birth. But that hasn’t slowed her down any. She has quite possibly the most unique set of powers.
She can transform into any form of energy, for which she has found countless uses. She’s gained the ability to fly, turn invisible, and has even become immortal thanks to her powers. When in energy form, Monica has a very unique trick she can do. Those that can absorb energy can absorb Monica. The most well known and famous combination is of course Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and Monica. But Monica has also helped to keep Vision alive by lending him her energies.
5 Wanda Maximoff (AKA Scarlet Witch)
Wanda Maximoff has one of the more complicated histories in the Marvel universe, which is saying something. Her family and love life is a story in and of itself, but that’s not the reason she’s been included in this list. Wanda has taken up many other names in her travels, but her best-known name is the Scarlet Witch.
As the Scarlet Witch, she joined the Avengers, fought off countless dangers, and so much more. The Scarlet Witch has faced many unique threats, some that surpassed the abilities of even Doctor Strange himself. Wanda can warp reality with little more than her mind and her will. This can be a strong resource, as well as a significant threat. Wanda has had her ups and downs, but has fairly consistently been on the side of good, fighting for what she believes in.
4 Jennifer Walters (AKA She-Hulk)
Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, is one of the strongest ladies around. And we’re not just talking in the physical sense – though there is that. Like many others, She-Hulk isn’t the only alias that she’s taken up. However, it is the one she is best known for.
Jennifer has many of the abilities known to Hulk. However, until recently there was one major difference between the Hulk that resides in Bruce Banner, and the Hulk that resides in Jennifer: Jennifer never lost her sense of self while in her Hulk form. Or at least, she rarely ever did. Having superior control while in her Hulk form has allowed her to do more delicate hero work, while limiting the risk she posed to civilians nearby.
3 Jane Foster (AKA Mighty Thor)
Jane Foster has also earned a place on this list, though she wasn’t an Avenger for very long. While she was a superhero she carried the name Thor (though many call her the Mighty Thor, for the sake of distinguishing her from Thor Odinson).
Jane wielded all the powers we’ve come to expect from Thor himself. However, she seemed to use Mjolnir differently than Odinson ever did. Perhaps it was her advanced education that allowed her to move the hammer the way she did? She continued on as Thor, even when wielding Mjolnir was quite literally killing her. Her sheer determination to battle evil and protect the world against Malekith speaks volumes about her character.
2 Greer Grant Nelson (AKA Tigra)
Although Tigra may not be able to match the powers of a hero like Jessica Jones or Squirrel Girl, she brings something unique to the team. Her cat-like abilities, expert hand to hand combat, acrobatic skills, police training, enhanced senses, and psychic protection makes her one of the most well rounded Avengers.
What’s more, due to the mystical origins of her abilities, the character may be capable of far more magic than we realize. She was once even a contender to be the Sorcerer Supreme! She’s a very important part of the Avengers roster who cannot be ignored from this list.
1 Carol Danvers (AKA Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel)
Carol Danvers has had a long and complicated history in the Marvel universe. She’s currently known as Captain Marvel, but she’s been known by many other names as well. Carol has carried the names Binary, Ms. Marvel, Warbird, and a dozen others. Carol is another hero who gained her powers through exposure. She’s got superhuman strength, durability, and so much more.
Through her powers she can fly, and is even protected in the vacuum of space. One of Captain Marvel’s strongest features is her ability to absorb and manipulate power and energy. Carol has been a part of a few different incarnations of the Avengers. At one point, she was even the leader for the team. Most recently she’s happily followed T’Challa’s lead on the Avengers, where she’s helped protect the world from all new threats.
