Wilhelm Röntgen discovered the understanding of modern radiation with his x-ray experiment in 1895. After blocking a particular test tube, he found that rays of light were still getting through, reacting with a barium solution he had nearby.

He conducted several experiments with this, including taking the first x-ray, a picture of his wife’s hand.

Today, radiation is relatively well known and can be considered dangerous. However, scientists are still studying electromagnetic fields, also known as EMFs.

What Are EMFs?

EMFs, also known as electromagnetic fields, have been around since the beginning of the universe.

The sun gives off EMFs naturally, which is known as radiation. We can see the energy as it radiates out. This is the light that we can visibly see.

As technology advanced and indoor electricity and powerlines were created, scientists discovered that these also gave off EMFs. As we use more electricity, we become exposed to more EMFs.

However, most scientists do not find EMFs to pose a significant health concern.

Types of Exposure

To understand the different categories of EMFs, you must understand the electromagnetic spectrum and the different types of radiation. This shows radiation ranging from high-frequency to low-frequency.

Types of high-frequency radiation are X-rays, gamma rays, and ultraviolet rays.

High-frequency radiation is known to be ionizing radiation, meaning it can damage DNA and cells by removing electrons from atoms. This may cause genetic mutations or cancer.

Low-frequency radiation examples include infrared light, nonvisible light, and radiofrequency radiation. Other low-frequency EMF sources are microwaves, computers, WiFi routers, cellphones, Bluetooth devices, power lines, MRI machines, and other electronic devices.

Low-frequency radiation does have the ability to make atoms vibrate and move them around the body, but it is thought that it is not enough to damage DNA or cells.

Protection Methods

Most of the EMFs that you’ll come in contact with will be mostly harmless, and when it’s not, such as with an x-ray, protection is always used.

However, if you’d like to ensure your safety from EMF radiation while at home and on the go, there are a few things you can do.

Put your phone down when you aren’t using it, and keep it away from you. Carry your phone in a bag, not your pocket. Use the speaker button instead of pressing it up against your ear.

Don’t stand next to appliances when it isn’t necessary. Unplug occasionally and take a few days off from using an electronic device.
